Still not Sure if you Need Counseling for Anxiety or Depression?

Anxiety

Did you know that out of all of the emotions we feel…joy, content, anger, disgust, anxiety/fear…anxiety is the one emotion we are taught throughout our lives to “get out of”.  We are taught that anxiety is a bad emotion, when in actuality it is the one emotion that saves us.  For example, when we are crossing a street and hear a car beep it’s horn, we get a rush of adrenaline. This automatically causes us to jump back to safety. Anxiety is like that rush of adrenaline, but we don’t understand why we are experiencing it.

When is anxiety ok to experience and when is it time to seek therapy?

Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. You might feel anxious when faced with a problem at work, before taking a test, or making an important decision.  One does not necessarily need to address occasional anxiety if it does not interfere with one’s ability to successfully navigate through one’s daily experiences.  If you find yourself experiencing a pattern in your occasional anxiety, and want to learn better coping skills, please give me a call.  We can work together to identify better thinking patterns that feel more comfortable and are healthier ways of thinking that will decrease anxiety.

Anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For a person with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time. These feelings can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, school work, and relationships.

Unlike the relatively mild, brief anxiety caused by a specific event (such as speaking in public or a first date), according to the national institute of mental health, anxiety that lasts at least six months is generally considered to be a problem that might benefit from therapy.

Anxiety disorders are treatable.  With proper treatment, many people with anxiety disorders can lead normal, fulfilling lives. If you think you may have an anxiety disorder or if anxiety is interfering with your emotional peace, then please call me.  I have successfully worked with many who have experienced generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder and/or post traumatic stress disorder.  Many people I work with, who have anxiety disorders, have learned how to navigate through uncomfortable feelings and successfully live a more peaceful and satisfying life.  Please contact me.  You do not need to let anxiety stop you from enjoying your life or your marriage.

Depression

Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work, home and in relationships.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Not everyone who is depressed experiences every symptom. Some people experience only a few symptoms while others may experience many. Several persistent symptoms in addition to low mood are required for a diagnosis of depression, but people with only a few – but distressing – symptoms may benefit from treatment. The severity and frequency of symptoms and how long they last will vary depending on the individual and his or her particular illness.

When is depression ok to experience and when is it time to seek therapy?

Depression from a loss of a loved one, a job or any other major life changes is to be expected. We all feel depressed from a loss.  If you experienced loss, please click here to learn more about grief and loss counseling.

Feelings of sadness, that is not from any loss, and lingers for two weeks or more may be depression. Are you experiencing any of these symptoms of depression? Please call to get you started in feeling more like yourself.

How can counseling help me feel better?

We are finally beginning to hear how important it is to take care of our mental health, including our emotions. Counseling will help you understand where the anxiety and/or depression is coming from. It may be from a chemical imbalance and we can work together to get you the help you need medically and emotionally so you can return to feeling more comfortable.

Anxiety & Depression can also be caused by things that accumulated over time, where you didn’t learn coping mechanisms that really work. Growing up, I never even knew there was such a thing as coping mechanisms to help me feel more comfortable when I really wanted to. You probably did not have lasting coping skills that worked to prevent suffering from painful experiences. Overtime as life kept going on, emotions that built up were pushed down, and what worked then doesn’t work now.

Counseling will help you begin to listen to your emotions and see where change needs to be made. By working together, you will learn new ways to reduce anxiety and depression.

Let’s get you back to feeling more in control of your emotions and feel good again about yourself, life and your relationships. Please contact me today to have a free phone consultation to get you started in being in control again.
